Trend-setters’ forecasts
make a splash for spring

BACK IN August, fashion
forecasters at Igedo, an inter-
national trade show held in
Dusseldorf, Germany, were
determining the trends in
swimwear for spring/summer
°96.

Their recommendations influ-
ence what retailers buy for seasons
to come. Expect the following
shapes, styles and fabric choices to
land in stores soon.

Shimmering and _ iridescent
color hits the beach. Get into the
swim with mother-of-pearl, liquid
silver and blinding white. Ultra-
stretch, high-gloss materials have a
wet or metallic look.

Hollywood glamor and the exot-
ic allure of Asian cultures influence
another trend that heralds the
comeback of curves. Think Esther
Williams on the silver screen in the
1940s. Push-up bra tops and halter
necklines make a huge splash. So
do sophisticated ruching, intricate
shoulder straps and corset looks.
Bathing-suit bottoms are cut full,
waist-high and straight across the
legs in a “boy cut.”

Sexy suits party till dawn when
paired with coordinated skirts.

Fabrics are colorfully bright or
dark and intensive. Fruity tones,
intense colors and exotic prints
focus attention on the wearer.

Swimsuit fabrics are used in
body-conscious holiday-wear
pieces: waist-skimming shirts, hot
pants, cycling pants and little
skirts, :

Canadian sportswear. Before selecting a
raincoat, it is important to examine the
fobric content to see if it will serve your
wardrobe needs. Raincoats today are made of
many different types of fabric and often have
been treated with special water-repellent
finishes. The greatest concern affecting
rainwear is that people walt too long before
cleaning, thinking the water-repellent
finishes will prevent soiling. Consequently,
dirt is more likely to become embedded into
the fabric, making treatment more difficult.
Cleaners will often pretreat rainwear before
commencing the process to prevent
stains and soil from becoming set. Also, as
rainwear ages, its water-repellent finishes may
break down. Most drycleaners have special

edures for re-treating rainwear that has

its finish. Finally, to extend the life of
your rainwear, never store it when it is still
wet, Instead, brush off excess water and
allow it to dry thoroughly.

sporty suits. One- and two-piece
suits borrow stripes and pipings
from boxing, soccer and baseball
garb.

For the romantic there are suits
trimmed in lace or ric-rac and
inserts of stretch tulle.

Trend-watchers are champi-
oning the return of the litle bikini,
but only for the young and fit.
Triangle bikinis and bandcau styles
in mini-prints, polka dots and
glazed effects are a hit.

Prints make a comeback in one-
piece suits patterned with Asian
lettering, abstract florals, and a pot-
pourri of ethnic designs.
