West Van expands involvement with B.C. Tel

THE WEST Vancouver School District is
expanding its involvement with the B.C. Tel
education centre for computer software and pro-
gram development in five local elementary
schools.

On Monday, District 45 Secretary-lreasurer Len
Archer said the district is receiving a “big bang for its
buck" by renting software from B.C. Tel and then hav-
ing customized programs made to fit the requirements
of teachers and students.

He said the district is able to rent instructional soft-
ware for about $80 a month, significantly less than the
estimated thousands of dollars it would cost for schaols
to buy the programs.

Audrey Van Alstyne and Bruce Breedveld, with B.C,
Tel, provided committee members a quick and detailed
overview of its Discovery Learning Service.

The service is designed to provide relevant, reliable,
up-to-date and easy-to-use computer-based learning
resources for students and teachers in classroom and
computer lab settings.

Van Alstyne explained that the new computer pro-
grams are successful “motivational tools” which make it
easier and more fun for students to learn their skills,

She added that unlike many instructional programs,
the games and assignments available on computers
encourage pupils to “come into classes early and stay
late.”

Meanwhile a recent survey of District 45 parents and
staff members shows support for changes to the school

calendar. The school district's time options convmittee
chairman and teachers’ association representative Dave
Weightman said that the survey showed degrees of sup-
port for beginning the school year earlier and also
adding extra days to the spring vacation.
