District Council, ts not
prepared to consider
limiting the hours of all-
night convenience Stores.

A motion proposed by Coun.
Rick Buchols requesting a staff
report on the process required to
restrict hours of operation of
convenience stores, gas bars and
similar retailers got little support
Monday night.

Buchols had proposed the mo-
tion as a possible way to reduce
loitering and noise complaints
from residential areas around
some of the stores.

Buchols said that many of the
late-night convenience stores are
franchise operations and required
by their contract to be open all
night.

He said that all-night openings
in the district were rarely econom-
ic business decisions.

But the majority of council was
not prepared to “‘interfere’’ in the
market place and refused even a
staff report on the subject.

However, a staff report on
video and entertainment games in
convenience stores was requested
by council's corporate services
standing committee last week.
