MAILBOX Leave Collins in the tank Dear Editor: Doug Collins, our 1940s dinosaur, Farley Mowat. a favorite Canadian author (and biggest liar) and Harry Rankin, our favorite Commie millionaire lawyer, all have one thing in common — they are all veterans. However, after giving them their kudos and our grateful ex- pressions, we don’t have to believe everything they say and if they want to become nasty, rambling old goats, who cares? Trying to throttle Collins is sim- ilar to placing a filter on a bilge pump. We don’t need it — what we need is continued free expres- sion and free speech, however we disazsee with it. Our beautiful world is verv complex, tut there are certain forms of fife not readily seen, without which we cannot live. We cannot live without bacteria, and when certain types of bacteria are attenuated or extirpated. we all suffer. Bacteria Keeps our wilderness alive. Compost heaps require bacteria to function, as do septic tanks. A septic 1ank is a good example of all kinds of inevetients going in which are ingest. and red. ced by bacteria. A relatively benigis ef- fluent emerges to the field which is percolated and the trace phosphates and nutrients are greedily absorbed by = thriving plant life. Removing any bacteria will negate efficiency and a scrub- bed out tank has to be started ugain by introducing bacteria (in the form of rotien meat, dead cat, €tc.). At times like this, i liken our Raise child-care awareness Dear Editor: Recent events in Mantensville, Sask., are indeed a grin reminder of the need for national standards for child care in this country, as your recent editorial so rightly pointed out. To help address some of these concerns the North Shore Child Care Resource Society (NSCCRS) has focused on the need for an in- formation and referral service of all licensed child care facitities across the North Shore to heip parents looking for daycare. Although we planacd to have this service available at the begin- ning of September, we are having difficulties finding funding. AS parents we also have a re- sponsibility to carefully inspect the “second homes’’ where our Aird took cheap Dear Editor: As honcrary colonci of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada, | am concerned about the cheap shot taken at the regiment by Louise Aird in her June 3 enter- tainment column. The Seaforth, as of today, are rated one of the best, if not the best militia unit in B.C. This can be confirmed by phoning Colonel! Chipman, chief of staff, B.C. area, at 666-4330. I do not know where Ms. Aird children spend so much of their time, whether in a group or family daycare setting. To help in the selection process, the society plans to provide parents with informa- tion that will lead to a better un- derstanding of the issues involved when placing children in care of others. By raising awareness on child care throughout the community, it is hoped that incidents involving abuse such as occurred in Martensville may be avoided. As a community fet us extend to all involved our sympathy and support and fet us direct’ our ehergies towards ensuring the best possible care is provided for the children of the North Shore. See Armstrong, Chair, NSCCRS shot in column got her information. To my knowledge, she has had no con- tact with the regiment since her father left the regimental associa- tion (wo years ago due to a disagreement. 1 consider this irresponsible reporting and wish to express my disappointment that Ms. Aird would resort to putting her per- sonal views in her column. To remove the Collins type of bacteria or rot unilaterally may damage the final result, which, translated, will only damage our concept of fr-2 speech and free expression to tie detriment of us all. Far better to leave Collins where he is (in the tank), with no fuss. G.B. Miller North Vancouver Ald. Danyliu corrects info Dear Editor: In response to your June 24 letter of the day, E.J.
