Canada 125 seeks videos

Anniversary collection looks at nat’! lifestyies

ARE YOU sitting on a potential
winror?

Whether it’s a music video, a
public service armouncement or a
plain old slice of life, all Canadians
are being invited to submit short
videos: to the Canadian Video
Challenge, part of Canada 125.

The idea is to compile a coilec-
tion of short videos from urban to
tural communities across Canada.
“Canadians everywhere wiil ex-
perience a sampling of each
other's lives and get to know each
other better,’ say contest orga-
nizers. :

and special events; sports and rec-
reation; art and culture; the en-
vironment; community services

Entrants may submit one or
more videos to a maximum of five
minutes each. Entries received be-
fore Sept. 30 will be judged by
regional and national panelists.
Several prizes will be given to
semi-finalists and finalists in each

category as well as a grand orize
winner. There will also be a peo-
ple’s choice award from each
province and territory.

The producers plan to collect
the best submissions for a VHS
125 Anniversary Collection. The
tape will be provided to schools,
libraries and community and cul-
tural groups.

New work to premiere
at summer music camp

THE WEST Coast Amateur Musi-
cians will perform a new work by
Latvian-born composer and vio-
finist Imant Raminsh at their
eighth annual Shawnigan Lake
Music Holiday.

The group will perform Gloria,
which they commissioned, for
the first time. Raminsh has writ-
ten dozens of choral and or-
chestral works which incorporate

folk melodies of his native land.
He will be working with conduc-
tor Gerald van Wyck at
Shawnigan Lake and is sched-

Society’s summer music camp is
held from July 19-26. Participants
will have the chance to iearn
vocal techniques, madrigals,
