Ree calls it quits after 12 years North Van-Capilano MLA says current campaign ‘not good’ AFTER /2 years of serving as the MLA for North Vancouver-Capilano, Social Credit’s Angus Ree has decided to retire from politics. Ree, 62, said he decided one year ago that he was not going to seek re-election. In a wide- ranging interview with the News prior to the Oct. 17 pro- vincial election, Ree discussed his political career, his obser- vations about the current pro- vincial election campaign and his own future. NSN: Why have you decided to retire from politics?: Ree: ‘‘The fun’s gone from it for me. If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing then change. Do something you’re going to enjoy if you can afford to do that. I hope I can afford to. I don’t enjoy it anymore. There’s different people; it’s gotten dirtier. It’s sotten into personalities and not into ac- complishments and policies.. “It’s into name calling and J don’t want to be a part of By Surj Rattan News Reporter that.’’ NSN: What has been your greatest schievement as MLA?: Ree: ‘tl guess it was when I was solicitor general. I felt I brought in an awareness on traffic. They asked me on my first day as solicitor general what my priorities were in the office I held. To me it was traffic safety because of the number of people we kill and injure. “If that’s my biggest achievement then I guess my biggest downfall was not being able to continue in the job for a greater period cf time. “*] guess another main achievement was the Lonsdale overpass. I worked at that for 12 years and fortunately it was finished before I left office, but the disappointment was that we should have had the Westview overpass finished too. We would have if the money had not gone to the Coquihalla Highway.”’ NSN: What do you think of the current provincial efection campaign?: Ree: ‘‘The current election campaign is a result of the last five years and the different people we’ve had in the last five years. (Premier Johnston) Rita’s been tarred with an awful lot of what’s happened under (former premier) Bill Vander Zalm. Maybe the par- ty’s entitled to be tarred with that because the party picked him as leader, but 1 don’t think Rita personally has to. “The present campaign is not a very good one. I watched the leaders’ debate and 2fter it was over I turned to my wife and said that was one of the best. comedy hours I had wat- ched in a long time. (New Democratic leader Mike) Har- court clearly didn’t win and Rita didn’t show any class and she should have. She won points by default.’’ NSN: What are your plans for the future?: Ree: ‘I’m not going to get in- volved with politics. think I have tremendous experience . and background knowledge that could be put to some- body’s use. I have no firm plans at the moment. J hope I could get some sort of board appointments, do some research or negotiations.” NSN: Are you going to miss political life?: Ree: ‘‘Not at all. {t’s been very time consuming and it takes an awful lot of your energy. The general public really doesn’t know what their elected repre- sentatives are involved with. It’s not an easy job. I had a two-month period as solicitor general and | think I had 36 plane trips in that time. “MLAs, I’m_ not talking about cabinet ministers, are under paid. If you want your MLA to do a good job and be responsible, you should be pay- ing him more.’*
