Winter Games JAMES BUCKLE, a Grade 12 Argyle student, won a gold medal in boxing at the B.C. Winter Games in Duncan. Competing in the intermediate 147-lb. class, Buckle, 17, improv- ed on the silver medal he won at last year’s winter games held in Penticton. His gold medal match against George Clark of Revelstoke was stopped just one minute, 4§ se- conds into the fight. Buckle boxes with the Astoria Boxing Club and will now com- pete in the open class. Another North Vancouver resi- dent, Lorne Salt, also won gold at the B.C. Winter Games. A member; of the Burnaby Haia Speed Skating Club, Salr, 20, won the overall title in class four senior men’s speed skating, and broke many provincial records in the process. Salt set records in the 400-metre with a time of 44.84 over 46.28, in tke 1,000-metre with 2.01.92 over 2.04.52 and in the 1,500-metre with 3.04.87 over 3.27,30. He narrowly missed setting a record in the 800-metre. In gymnastics at the winter games, West Vancouver's Catherine Shankel, 13, narrowly missed the medal placings among the provincial A gymnasts. A Flicka Club gymnast, Shankel finished fifth overall with a total of 32.70 points. She was second on the uneven bars with 8.10, third on the vault with 8.70 and ninth on the balance beam and floor with 7.65 and 8.25 respec- tively. In the provincial B division, Colette Kime, 14, who trains with the West Coast Dynamos, finished 1Sth overall. Her highest placing was on vault with 8.30 and fifth place. Shankel was a member of the North Shore team who placed fifth overall with a total of 86.30. Chavarria signed PROFESSIONAL SCOUT Don Shwery of West Vancouver signed David Chavarria last week to play baseball for the Texas Rangers. Son of Vancouver Mounties’ Ossi, Chavarria, 17, plays for the Burnaby Central Wildeats and is the third local player to be signed recently by the Rangers. A gangly 678°", 195-pound tight-handed pitcher, Chavarria went to Cuba with the B.C. Selects 18-and-under junior na- tional team and was on the Western Canada Games gold medal team. Thompson, 15, was selected after he placed first in the 200- metre breaststroke event for 15- and 16 year-old competitors at the Canadian national champicnships held recently in Calgary. Meanwhile, at the senior pro- vincial championships held last month at UBC, Thompson fought off a shoulder injury to win gold medals in the 50-metre breaststroke and the 100-metre breaststroke as well as a silver in the 200-metre breast.
