Rey sae, BRANES Bae Tae To EPPS CEM I I ORNIETHDE ERUS SSC TENRRGEAT AU BORONT RTO STRATE EET IIIS Me SANTA, ITS CATING Raa ALB MAILBOX Moe Sihota took appropriate step Dear Editor: in his July [8 fetter MLA Angus Rec attempts to disparage the release of the infamous Bud Smith tapes by Moe Sihota. He asks why they were not taken di- rectly to the police or the deputy attorney general rather than being released in a political manner. Possibly Mr. Ree forgets the fact that in British Columbia the police do not have the right to di- rectly lay charges but are required to submit them to the attorney general’s department. And how can this department easily assess the conduct of its boss? Since the attorney general reports direcily to the legislature it was entirely appropriate for that body to hear the shocking truth about potential obstruction of justice charges. Mr. Ree also refers to the Romanian secret police, their telephone bugging and asks three times, ‘*Who paid for the tapes?”’ Mr. Ree should apologize, like the premier has, for implying that there was a plot to get Bud Smith. The public outcry over Mr. Smith’s behavior demonstrates a much greater concern among Brit- ish Columbians over the moral and legal conduct of the present government than the release by the NDP of third-hand informa- tion. Mr. Ree and the premier are at- tempting to shift public attention from the outrageous conduct of Bud Smith. Their lack of com- ment and concern about the real issue — political interference in criminal proceedings — reveals a Tegrettable political bias towards the office of the attorney general and contempt for the public at large. Brian Giles NDP Candidate West Vancouver-Garibaldi Reynolds ‘ridiculous’ Dear Editor: John Reynolds, MLA for West Vancouver-Howe Sound, has reportedly installed a de-bugging device in his constituency office, to ‘prevent Mr. Sihota and the NDP from tistening in on (Reynolds’) calls."’ (North Shore News, July 25.) Neither the government nor the opposition has come out of the Bud Smith tapes affair looking good, but for Mr. Reynolds to suggest in his comments that the NDP might bug his phone borders on the ridiculous. The tapes were not: made by politicians, and hopefully 1984 has not invaded B.C. politics, although anything is possible in this province. Mr. Sihota handled the matter poorly. He should not have raised the issue in the Legislature as he did, but rather gone to the police or to the deputy attorney-general. In his passion to discredit Mr. Smith, Mr. Sihota adopted the wrong tactics. Mr. Smith was clearly in breach of his duties as attorney-general by trying to influence a legal ac- tion, but at least he resigned, and did so quite promptly. He has paid the price with his cabinet position and possibly his political career, All of us in British Columbia should be ashamed of this scan- dal. We are all discredited by the matter, and Mr. Reynolds has on- ly added to the mess by voicing concerns that his phone might be bugged. Does he think that politi- cal Brownie points are to be gain- ed by this? Jeremy Dalton Provincial Liberal Candidate West Vancouver-Capilano News avoided real issue? Dear Editor: Re: July 25 headline: “MLA Reynolds installs phone debugging service.”’ You report and you quote: ‘1 have a machine in my office in West Vancouver that will prevent Mr. Sihota and the NDP from listening in on my cails,’’ said Reynolds. Mr. Editor, you are now in the same category as Vander Zalm, Reynolds, Richmond, etc. in avoiding the real issue that the top law officer in B.C., Bud Smith, was prepared to ruin a fellow lawyer’s reputation because he was hired by Mr. Sihota to act in the Reid lottery scandal.
