Spring look has Eastern influence

THE FASHION theme for spring
°90 might be summed up as classic
with a touch of the exotic.

The rich Eastern influences that
splashed on the scene last fall are
still gaining momentum. Indian
prints and jewelry are cropping up
in both haute couture and ready-

thousands of years of skill. It is no
wonder the Western fashion world
admires and emulates it.

The most evident manifestations
of this Eastern influence are in
sarongs — usually for evening —
and in gold shoes, the accessory of
the season.

A close second in popularity to
the gold of the Far East is lace,
especially black tace. Many pat-
terns are mixed unconventionally;
stripes with florals and florals with
houndstooth. Animal prints are

Indian goldworking in particular
has intrigued designers and is the
inspiration for belts and shoes as
well as jewelry.

The ubiquitous gold body trim
has a historical as well as an
esthetic explanation. Indians
treasure their gold more than any
other nationality: Even the most
impoverished Indian citizen usually
owns a little gold.

Gold is often the only wealth an
Indian woman possesses. She is
given gifts of gold jewelry all
through her childhood, and on her
wedding day, she wears every piece
of it. If her husband dies or sepa-
rates from her, her gold is often
the sole ‘‘insurance’’ she has.

Although it is forbidden by law
to import gold into India, the de-
mand is such that smuggling is
rampant. With primitive tools and
in the dim light of secret rooms,
