10 - Sunday, Jaruary 28, 1990 - North Shore News Duck race organizers gear up for river fun ALTHOUGH THE 1990 Great Capilano River Duck Race doesn’t get quacking until Sunday, Feb. 18, there are plenty of pre-race events up around the river bend. Earlier this month, the three North Shore mayors declared the week of Feb. 10 to 18 as Great Capilano River Duck Week. On Feb. 3, B.C. Lions footbali team players Tony Martino, Paul Whetmore and Jamie Buis will be signing autographs at Lynn Valley Mall I p.m. to 2 p.m. and at Capilano Mall from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. On Feb. 10, team players will be at Park Royal South | p.m. to 2 p.m. and at Lonsdale Quay from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. In partnership with race orga- nizers, the North Vancouver Rotary Club, the Capilano Suspension Bridge will be hosting a Celebrity Duck Day, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sunday, February 4. Ongoing entertainment includes face painting and radio station CHRX on location, GVRD of- ficials will be on hand as well. At noon, a duck hunt gets under way. Twenty-five ducks will be hidden on the west side of the suspension bridge. Finders will be able to turn in their ducks for a prize. A celeb- rity duck race is set for 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Race winners will have a con- tribution made to their favorite charity. Admission to the celebrity duck day will be the purchase of one duck ticket to the Great Capilano River Duck Race or two tickets per family. Children are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The North Shore Family YMCA and the North Vancouver Rotary Club will be hosting a Duck Ball, Sahaja Yoga taught | NORTH SHORE members of Vishwa Nirmala Dharma Educa- tional Society are conducting a series of seven meetings to in- troduce and teach the technique of enlightened awareness known as Sahaja Yoga. The meetings will be held at the North Vancouver City Library, 121 W. 14th St., on seven con- secutive Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 30 and continuing on Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27 and March 7 and 13. Start- ing time is 7 p.m. Anyone who cares deeply about this planet, who is fed up with be- ing confused and manipulated in the search for balance and integra- tion, and who wants to become empowered in order to enlighten, nourish and empower others is in- vited to attend. The founder of this movement, Shri Mataji, stayed in West Van- couver during her visits to the area in 1983 and 1989 during which time thousands of people attended her programs.
