The project has been delayed more than 10 years, even though North Shore schcols are now bursting at the seams and hundreds of children are being educated in portables. For years, Burrard View students have put up with a facility which is woefully inadequate — especially in an affluent community and « school district noted fer its advanced approach to education. Unlike the 1960s when schools popped up like mushrooms to keep up with rapid development, a new school today has to go through a maze of government approval, and it must fit itself into a well-developed neighborhood being mindful of the surrounding en- vironment. While a more environmentally sensitive approach to any development is to be lauded, it is unfair when people wave the environmental flag when in fact their concerns stem from self-interest and resistance to neighborhood change. As in any dispute, the concerns of all parties must be weighed and the needs of the neighborhood children must be addressed with a view to a compromise solu- ion.
