8 ~ Wednesday, April 19, 1989 - North Shore News Child's life ‘comes second’ t Dear Editor: For many years, and especially since January 1988, the parents of children attending Westview School have been asking Tony Barber, design engineer for the Ci- ty of North Vancouver, to have a pedestrian-controlled light installed at the intersection of Bewicke and Larson. Our reasons for this request have been as follows: the intersection has become a major traffic route; © one school crossing guard cannot adequately supervise the two ex- isting school crosswalks; © Westview Daycare children, at- tending from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., cross the intersection unassisted HOWE SOUND POLLUTION Shame on environment minister Dear Editor: As a resident of Bowen Island, I am appalled at the manner in which the Howe Sound pulp mills are polluting our air and water. Your March 29 article about the dioxin testing just shows the pa- thetic attitude of the mills and especially of our supposed en- vironment minister Bruce Strachan, when the miils are warn- ed in advance of the testing, so they can “try to keep possible dioxin reading as low as possible during the three days of tests."’ Strachan then defends Western Pulp by saying, ‘It just shows they're working hard to identify and remedy any problems."’ Come on. What it shows is that the mills ac only concerned with having the tests come out as favorably as possible, and thus be allowed to continue to pollute our environ- ment with their deadly chemicais. Shame on Mr. Strachan for put- ting the almighty dollar higher on his list of priorities than the health of the many families that live in the Howe Sound area. Howe Sound already has the highest incidence of breast cancer, per capita, of anywhere in Canada, the sheilfish are unfit for human Grateful She Wasn’t Aborted Sandra Wade, adopted 18 years ago — “¥ challenge anyone to say it would have been a just act to destroy my life by abortion.’’ “It’s hard to believe my life was a mistake for my natural mother; yet ! guess it was. But, for my adoptive parents, that same mistake was the fulfilment of a dream. I wish my natural mother were here today. ! think she'd be proud.” “1m glad I was born | in 1969 when my pre-natal life was protected by law.” Advertisement sponsored Noth Shore Dee bie consumption, and now, in addition to allowing unacceptable levels of polluting by existing mills, plans are under negotiation to construct a huge petrochemical plant near Britannia Beach, to spew more poison into our air and water. As residents of the North Shore, Howe Sound, and the earth in general, we must not aliow the MAILBOX before and after school hours; * traffic violations, over which we have no control, have been consis- tent (speeding and driving through occupied crosswalks). Mr. Barber has informed us that the City of North Vancouver budget for 1989 has allowed for the inclusion of a signal, possibly by the summer of this year. How- destruction of our environment and our health. Be vocal, write let- ters, and vote for responsible poli- ticians who are committed to preserving and cleaning up our en- vironment. Let’s get it together before it’s too late, Cathy Wicks Bowen Island ever, the parents of Westview are concerned that the safety of their children is being put on hold for yet more months. Mr. Barber has informed us that there is no money left in the 1988 budget for the installation of the light which we are asking for. Why is it, then, that a set of traffic lights at 23rd and St. Georges as well as by the new Save-On- Foods store managed to push through the budget? Furthermore, what warrants the pedestrian crossing light at St. convenience Georges and Esplanade which was recenily installed? Are these intersections more un- safe than the one at Larson and Bewicke? We say not. Rather, is convenience to the public the key issue here? It makes one wonder just how wisely our tax dollars are being spent when the life of a child comes second in line to conve- nience.
