WY COUPLE SEEKING DONATIONS TO SAVE CARNIVAL RIDE Friends of the Carousel seek $350,000 WEST VANCOUVER residents Pat and Keith Jamieson want someone to help them grab the brass ring. They are looking for some generous donor to come up with $350,000 to rescue the Playland carousel at the PNE from oblivion. The Jamiesons are members of a group called Friends of the Carousel, that hopes to persuade Vancouver City or some private benefactor to buy the dilapidated merry-go-round frem its present Playland owners and restore it to its original glory. Keith Jamieson says the 36-horse machine, a classic built in 1915, “needs to be rescued.'’ J_mieson says Playland hasn't looked after the machine. ‘‘It was not worked on by proper restoration experts,’’ he says. ‘“‘For three months last year it was outside in the rain without a top on it.’’ He suggests Playland either restore it properly or put it into the hands of an his- torical foundation. **The carousel has been in Van- couver since 1947, carrying thou- By RAY TICKSON Cortnbutne Writer sands of children,"* says Jamieson. “It's part of our heritage."" Jamieson says he believes Playiand's owner, York Hannover Hotels Ltd., of Mississauga, Ont., will break the machine up and sel! the horses to individual collectors if it can’t get the $350,000 price it’s asking. Carousel horses can be worth more sold to individual collectors than as an entire merry-go-round, Jamieson says. Some cities in the United States own carousels and operate them as concessions. New York, San Fran- cisco and Portiand all have wonderful carousels owned by the cities or historical foundations, says Jamieson. At one time there were over 4,000 wooden carousels in North America.
