V sculptor provides art

A WEST Vancouver sculptor pro-
vided the artistic fink at a dinner
reception connecting the vision of
a high-tech biomedical manufac-
turer looking to locate a plant in
B.C. with the pioneering Argenti-
nian doctor who performed the
world’s first coronary bypass
surgery.

Gerald Gladstone of G and I.

latest. sculptural expression, Life
Force, at 4a meeting Monday at-
tended by Dr. Rene Favaloro,
director of the Institute of Car-
diology and Cardiovascular
Surgery at Gluemes Private Hospi-

Artist Gladstone said he was re-
tained by Zaidi to “represent the
heart valve in a philosophical way
rather than in a purely scientific
way.”

“Asad wanted something more
than a mechanical reproduction of
the Bicer heart) valve. The
sculpture represents the rippling
pulse effect of the heartbeat,’ he
said.

At the heart of the Bicer valve is
a carbon disc sculpted hy # com-
puter. Gladstone’s sculpture in-

will ultimaiely become the pro-
totype for a larger work to be
placed in front of the new Bicer
Medical Ltd. facility planned for
construction in Richmond.

Said Gladstone: ‘‘A good feeling

piece — the circles incorporated
are the eternal, perpetual form."
