Since 1947, the Canadian Red Cross Society has provided that blood to all who need it, free of charge. The first blood donor to Canada’s national blood transfu- sion service was CBC broadcaster Bill Herbert, who shared his expe- tience on live radio in Vancouver on Jan. 21, 1947, From a small wooden hut on the grounds of Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver, the Canadian Red Cross blood transfusion service grew to a national network by 1961. Today, the transfusion ser- vice includes {7 blood centres stretching from coast to coast, providing blood to more than 950 hospitals in Canada every year. Did you know that: ein 1986, 750,000 blood donors gave 1,168,075 units of blood; © 50 years ago, a child would die if his blood was incompatible with his mother’s. Today a_ blood transfusion means that child can be delivered normally and live a long and healthy life; ®© 1,800 hemophiliacs in Canada depend on the continuous blood transfusion service of the Red Cross; © the Red Cross needs 5,000 blood donations every working day to maintain its high level of service, providing more than 20 different blood products, in addition to whole blood. In B.C., the Red Cross needs to collect 600 units of blood each working day ; * You cannot get AIDS by giving blood, and you can give blood every three months; *©2% million volunteers provide the time, money and blood dona- tions that enable the Red Cross to Operate nationally and interna- tionally. The 1987 Traffic Safety Awards Program, co-sponsored by ICBC and the Ministry of the Attorney General, is designed to encourage students to become interested in traffic safety issues and take action through projects aimed at all levels of the community. Awards of $300 will be given to 40 elementary schools and 30 sec- ondary school committees for winning projects.
