Run the cords above the ground, if possi- Replace bad bulbs WHEN A bulb on a Christmas tree light string, or electrically-lit deco- ration, burns out, replace the bulb as soon as possible (allow it to cool off and unplug the light string first). If you don’t, the other bulbs may burn at a higher than normal temperature, and the empty socket on the string could pose a potential shock hazard, especially for. young, curious children. Make certain you choose a replacement bulb with the correct wattage and/or voltage. The light String package (which should be retained after purchase) contains a marking to tell consumers which bulbs to use. Since 1986, it has been man- datory for manufacturers to attach ‘caution’ labels to all midget-type Christmas tree light strings and units. The labels tell the consumer what voltage to look for when purchasing replacement bulbs. The label reads, in part, “CAUTION: AVOID OVERHEATING, REPLACE BURNT-OUT LAMPS PROMPTLY.” Look for this label before you look for a replacement bulb. .
