Let me point out a few facts: 1, It makes about as much sense, economically speak- ing, to maintain and expand the present landfill as pour- ing sewage into our oceans and destroying the fish or Dear Editor: 1 live in Vancouver but pick up the ‘‘News”’ as often as possible to get Doug Col- - lins’“columns.' .{’ve | never written before but a publish: - ed letter’ from Ann Ferries critisizing “practically ~ everything got me going. , Ive ‘enjoyed Doug in sev- eral: major. news :upers and on: ‘radio and TV ‘over .many . and ‘upseiting, that somebody: who i is repre. senting our interest . parliament does not’ unders- tand - the basic elements regarding different groups of our society. . People, whose vision is blurred by a narrow paro- chial world outlook, will, of course, argue that landfills are cheaper. They are indeed at the start but it so happens that the “chickens are now coming home’’ and, if vou don’t believe it, I suggest that you count the millions of dollars District Taypayers already had to spend in try- ing to contain and minimize the damage to our environ- have scen him debate in per- son. If we expand our cur- rent Landfill until the in- cinerator is built, as you Suggest, we would only add a new dimension.to the pres- ent folly. Unpleasant as it is to temporarily haul North Shore garbage to Burns Bog, it is preferable to expanding the Premier. Street Landfill located in a flood plain, with the heavy rainfall we get, and adjacent to a salmon carrying river without im- pervious soil conditions. To do so would make us even bridge and would like to remind the North Shore News that freedom of the press does not mean equal time for them with a thrice weekly, paid columnist. Should the ‘Solidarity more shortsighted and_ ir- responsible than those who put the Landfill there in the first place. As far as I'm concerned, the closing of the Premier Street Landfill, with a view of going for incineration, is an important step forward and District Council is cor- rect to temporarily haul our garbage to Burns Bog until the incinerator is completed. I can only hope that District Council will have the courage to carry this thing through. I can well believe flins never tedious Times’’ revive (it lasted 10 subsidized issues) their opi- nions could find expression in a more appropriate medi- um.
