Al6 - Sunday, February 3, 1985 - North Shore News Recycling, recovery - TENDERS HAVE been call- ed for mid-March by the Greater Vancouver Regional District for proposals to divert garbage from landfills into recycling and conversion programs. Firms in Canada, the United States and Europe have shown interest in the proposal. The project is part of the GVRD’s waste management plan for the region, adopted in 1981, which includes recycling and incineration. Bids for the construction and operation of an incinerator in South Bur- naby received several weeks ago, are now being evaluated and the plant could be uider construction in six months. In hearings and public meetings held in recent months by the Lower Mainland Refuse Project, farmed by the Provincial Government to recommend a waste management plan for the entire Lower, Mainland, the recurrent suggestion from individuals and groups was the need to emphasize resource recovery in order to reduce waste going to landfills.
