AS HER FIRST professional designing assign-

ment, fashion student Lorri LePard re-designed
costumes for the six 10-foot clowns at Park Royal
for the mall’s upcoming Christmas display.

LePard is presently atten-
ding Ryerson back east and
returned to the school Tues-
day for her third year in
fashion. Patricia Robinson,
public relations at Park
Royal, is a friend of
LePard’s and hired her to
create the new costumes.

Two of the fancy new
clowns are now. wearing
bright red costumes with
satin hearts and gold trim.
Another two have been
dressed in striped and polka
dot fabric, while the last two
are wearing gold and silver
metallic fabric for an
especially festive look.

LePard said her first step
in the costume making was
to sketch the proposed out-
fits, and then go out to
check with different com-
panies the variety of fabrics
and materials and _ their
prices. From there she made
a proposal, which was ac-
cepted and the designs were
made into a reality.

LePard has been sewing
since she was five-years-old
she says, and her mother
bought her a sewing machine
when she was seven. She
designs her own patterns,
makes her own clothes and
designs and makes clothes
for friends.

‘*Since I started the fash-
ion course, I’ve learned so
much more about fashion, I
can just cut into material
without a pattern.’’

Throughout high school,
LePard made costumes for
theatrical productions, such
as the Pirates of Penzance.
Although she didn’t do the
actual designs, she made the
patterns and did much of the
sewing.

Although her plans for the
future are not clear at this
point in time, LePard can
see herself designing for
large manufacturers if she
doesn’t have her own
business. And eventually she
sees herself teaching sewing
or pattern making.
