As a former hockey and football player, LaForge had invitations to the camps of the Edmonton Eskimos and the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL, but an asthmatic condition ended any hopes of a playing career and that’s when he turned to coaching. As recreation director for the Enoch Indian Band near Ed- monton, his first coaching experience was with the Enoch tomahawks with whom he enjoyed much suc- cess during his four-year stay with the northern Alberta native group. He capped it off by capturing the Can-Am Junior B Championship in the 1979-80 season. From there, it was on to the Junior A He went East in 1980-81 in the Cup and guided the OHA Oshawa Generals to a 35-30-3 record and presided over current, Regina Pats Coaching percentage: .636 Oshawa Generals Kamloops Oilers Kamloops Oilers Canuck Tony Tanti who shattered Wayne Gretzky’s OHA rookie record by scor- ing 81 goals and 69 assists for 150 points. The fall of °81 saw LaForge go West again, this time to take over the coaching reins of the WHL Regional Pats, leading that junior club to a 48-24 record. It was there, and later in Kamloops, that LaForge coached Canuck defenceman Garth Butcher. The following season, he became coach/general manager of the struggling WHL Kamloops franchise and, through a combination of canny recruiting, wheeling and dealing, held the Oilers to third place in the WHL West Division standings with 46 wins and 26 losses. The dramatic 55-point leap in the standings from the season before when the club won just 12 games set a league record for improvement from BILL LAFORGE one year to the next. Commenting on LaForge’s appointment, Harry Neale said: ‘‘] wanted a young, en- thusiastic and = successful coach. Bill LaForge reflects those factors plus he’s a motivator who’s got the abili- ty to get teams to play up to and often above their poten- tial. He’s a communicator with great rapport with his players. And let’s face it — the NHL’s getting younger and younger every day.”’ About LaForge’s cocaching style, Neale noted: ‘‘] did a lot of investigating of Bill LaForge; I’ve watched him handle practices and I’ve seen him often in game situa- tions and I like what I’ve seen. All you have to do is watch his teams play and you can see that his players all put out for him. And, I daresay, if any player doesn’t put out, he’s apt not to get along with Mr. LaForge.”’ Bora: Edmonton, Alta., September 2, 1951 COACHING RECORD (Regular Season) OHA WHL WHL WHL 72 Coaching Totals REPS g 8 E8eea ; d de eth seats : Reve, ‘ GET-AWAY PACKAGE FROM ‘T7” Price tnx tudes accommodation only GOLF PACKAGE FROM $ mideweek from $32 on weekends Prive in dudes accommodation and All pres _ 2eT PeTsOn per night based on dna Price tee hades accom modation break Last and diane Occupant y uM Met fates means super savings on Get Away Pa kages to Whisder where you can be as lazy Of aS a ive as you feel 18 hole 0500 yard Amold Palmer (Nampionship Golf Course Tennis Swimming fishing canoeing or sailing on our stakes Jogging ditmbing walking on nding on Spectar aay mountain trails Or just lazing about soaking up the rays Shop our shops dance enyoy a chote of over 1) restaurants stay at any of 1S hotels or condominiums from moderate to first-class The rates are down scccome on up for a high okd Gime at down tw earth prices Call trom Vancouver Toll Free pos Wie id OWHIS : LER Trt VEAR ROUND MOAT REDON Mtrtry > Hass ot Se ’ . ee en Fe cae ue ia i aioe
