MANY CLASSIC and con
temporary tashions have
ongins buried in the past

The ascotois a tashion
which began in Victorian
England, where stylish
gentlernen, who went to the
faces at Ascot equally to see
and to be seen, wore rec:
tangular silk scarves tied
about the neck in such a way
that the knot was not ap-
parent, and fastened with an
elegant pin in silver or gold.

One ot today’s favorite
tabrics, corduroy, actually
dates back to the [E&th cen-
tury, when ait was devised in
France and, in an attempt to
give the new tabric a bit of
cachet, was dubbed ‘“‘corde
du ro.’ which translates as
“the king’s cloth”

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Culottes, have a more re-
cent - and eminently prac-
tical -- origin

Well into the 20th century,
the tiny island of Bermuda
maintained a regulation
which prohibited women
trom donning shorts

In order to tacilitate biey
cle nding by women, culottes

were created — long enough
to observe the law, but tar
more convenient than a skirt
for biovviine and other
activities

been traditional military
dress ever since

from the past is best and
most attractive, and making
itseem new and exciting once
again, earning i the hallowed
name of “classic”
