‘TIS THE SEASON Bureau has hopes for a merrier Christmas OVER THE next several issues, the North Shore News will present a series of articles on the efforts of North Shore groups to make Christmas a happy occasion for as many people as possible. During the series of articles we will look at the various agencies that get involved in helping the needy through the holiday season — and what you ° can do to help out. The series starts today with a look at the North Vancouver Christmas Bureau and continues Sun- day with a visit with the organizers of the West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund. By NEWS STAFF ; says Miller, about half of those would come back with a request for help. GERRY MILLER says the North Vancouver Christmas Bureau should know by the end of this week the extent of the demand for its services this holiday season. But she has few doubts that it will be heavy. Nearly 1,000 apphcation Last year, however, as the recession bit deep into the economy, there were 628 re- quests, nearly double the total from the year before. The = situation worse this year. Meeting that demand — basic food hampers or cer- could be would otherwise not get them — has become a major task for the Christmas Bureau. The job is so big, in fact, in an area the size of North Vancouver, that the Bureau's main role is as a co- ordinator. Unable to provide enough volunteers to thoroughly cover the area, the Bureau acts as a clearing house of information as much as anything — bringing together the needy and those who want to help. The Christmas Bureau also has connections with other organizations - such as the Toy Shop which specializes in making toys available for giv- ing, a service that will be pro- filed in a later article in this series. As Christmas approaches, the Bureau will be operating out of the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce of- fice at 131 East Second Street. (Telephone number 1s 985-8612.) perishable food items, toys, games and children's books but not, as stated in a weekend advertisement, clothing. These volunteers will be looking for an outpouring of generosity from the com- munity because of the ex- pected heavy demand. **My concern,’ says Miller, ‘‘is that we may have to cut the numbers of people off this time. That has never happened before.’’ AT 2932 Granville St A9 - Wednesday, December 7, 1983 - North Shore News Fire losses down THE COST of fire loss in North Van City 1s down well over a third this year because of a big drop in arson fires, in his inaugural address to councH, Mayor Jack Loucks said the overall fire loss to date is $354,544 which 15 a NMarrison calleries PRESENTS AN EXHIBITION BY DAVID LAM .
