THE SKID MARK Pedestrian’s responsibil By CONSTABLE RANDY HERMAN RCMP With school back, nights becoming longer and weather turning foul, we as drivers and pedestrians must be more alert and aware of each others’ actions. It is true that pedestrians do have the right of way whenever possible. However, pedestrians also have the streets and highways. You, as a pedestrian, must not assume that a driver is aware of your presence and above all must use common sense whenever you and motor vehicle traffic is present. When you are involved in an accident in a car you have some protection. When your body is struck by a car or other motor vehicle you will be the loser. Under the Motor Vehicle Act, you may be issued a ticket for disobeying the pedestrian lights which control pedestrian traffic at intersections. As drivers we must be aware of the green pedestrian lights which may turn to red at any time. Three of these lights are located at 21st and Lonsdale, 27th and Lonsdale and 28th and Westview. The latter currently being monitored as there have been a number of complaints regarding cars failing to stop when the light turns red. When these lights turn from flashing green to red YOU are required to stop. Failure to stop may result m a ticket. As a pedestrian YOU are required to activate the pedestrian light by pushing the button located on the light standard and _ cross when given permission by the WALK light. You as a pedestrian must cross in the crosswalk provided and at no other point. If you are found disobeying these pedestrian lights, you may be issued a ticket. If you are driving im areas of schools and playgrounds, be alert for children, animals and school cross walk As a driver you STOP SIGN. If you are a pedestrian you MUST obey the cross walk guard. These guards copy down all licence numbers of offending vehicles and report them to During the hours of darkness and inclement weather, pedestrians should wear bright . clothing or reflective type material. Umbrellas should be of the type which allow you to see e : lessened and if an emergency situation should arise a _ serious accident could occur. If you have to go out at night carry a flashlight. Whenever you have to cross the street you must use the cross walks provided; failure to do so could result in a ticket. As a driver, I find the pedestrian who is un- decided as to whether or not he or she wishes to cross the street, very annoying and above all very DANGEROUS. Pedestrians, please make that decision before you get to the edge of the curb. When a pedestrian is crossing the street or highway within a cross walk and the pedestrian is upon the half of the highway upon which your vehicle is travelling or is approaching so closely from the other half of the highway that he is in danger, you as the driver of the vehicle must yield the right of way. Where a vehicle is slowing down or stopping at a cross walk or at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the highway, no driver of another vehicle apporaching from the rear shall overtake and pass the vehicle which is slowing or stopped. Japanese told to limit exports WASHINGTON (UPI) - Labor Secretary Ray Marshall says the Japanese should respond to the plight of | milion uncmployed U.S. auto workers by voluntarily limiting exports of their automobiles to the United States.
