LAST MONDAY the family home of a convicted rapist
was burned to the ground in Lynnwood, Washington.
The incident was the result of public outrage in responce

to notices from the sheriff’s office warning that the man.

was to be released from prison. Meanwhile in North
Vancouver, several notices were recently distributed
warning of an alleged rapist in Edgemont Village.
Although the notices named a teenage boy and included

his address and telephone number, there was no basis
for the accusation. If was nothing more than a cruel
hoax. These two cases illustrate what can happen when
people take the law into their own hands. It is important
to pretect our communities from sexual offenders, but
at what cost? Sexual assault is a serious violation that
can have a lasting impact on its victims’ lives; however,
the same can he said for acts of vigilantism.
