tions where a senior may need
help.
Elder abuse is a term that
can be frightening to those of
us who don’t fike to think chat
anyone would harm an elderly
person. However, the B.C.
Office tor Seniors, part of the
Ministry of Health, tells us
thar many of us, especially
elderly women who live alone,
may be at risk of being
abused.
Elder abuse can take sever-
al forms.
Financial abuse is the mis-
use ofan elderly person's
funds or assets, without that
person’s knowledge and con-
sent.
Psychological abuse
includes verbal assaults, isola-
tion or humiliation, and can
cause the individual te lose
their sense of dignity and self
worth.
Physical abuse is any rough
treatment that can cause dis-
comtort or injury.
Some people who have
become forgetful and con-
fused need assistance in man-
aging their affairs. Friends or
family members must be alert
to the possibility of abuse in
these matters.
