north shore news @ SPORTS Sei an example for the kids IT’S an enormous responsibility and was once aptly described by George Bernard Shaw: “Perhaps the ereatest social service that can be readered by anybody both to our country and to mankind is that of bringing up a fainily.” As parents we set stan- dards of behaviour and teach lessons that are designed to help our children grow into strong, emotionally connect- ed adults with sound charac- ters. Many of the lessons they learn can and are taught in the athletic arena. Given the importance of the role of sport and its influence on youngsters it may be worthwhile review- ing attitudes to volunteer coaching and the kids them- selves so that all concerned can gain lasting value from the sporting process. The intensity of parental enthusiasm does seem to vary depending on the sport, but horror stories abound about out of control moms and dads who show no respect for kids or coaches. This kind of verbal (and sometimes physical) abuse would never be tolerated in most work environments and it certainly has no place around amateur sport yet it continues to exist and in some cases flourish. After six games of action in the Pacitic International Junior Hockey League sea- son, the North Shore team continues to struggle, though in most of those games they outplayed their competition. For example, despite out- shooting the Richmond Sockeyes 37-26 Thursday night in Richmond, the Caps were on the Josing end of a 4- 3 decision. With the win the Sockeyes improved to 6-0 on the season and tightened their grip of first place in the standings.
