Driving damage | brings court fine By Anna Marie D’Angela News Reporter TSUI Lan Chan Chu had her driver’s licence for less than two months when the ‘woman came out of her British Properties’ dri- veway on Feb. 5 and drove across into her neighbor’s land causing $6,000 worth of dam- age. According to West Vancouver Crown lawyer Dan Mulligan, Chu drave over a curb in the 1300-block of Cambridge onto her neigh- bor’s property, running over lants, hitting a conerete jampost, striking a garage and then finally stopping when her 1997 Land Rover hit a neigh- bor's house. The damage to the garage caused its rocf to buckle. Mulligan said on March 17 in West Vancouver provincial court that Chu, 47, was apparently distracted at the wheel as she closed a door on her moving upscale all-terrain vehicle at 1:30 p.m. Chu, without a lawyer, was given a few options by the Judge as to how she cou! deal with the charge against her. She chose to immediately plead guilty to the charge of driving without due care and attention, She was fined $200. Through a Cantonese interpreter, Chu explained that her young son was in the back of the vehicle and she did not have her full attention on the road as she approached a sharp turn at the bottom of her driveway. She stated she was not speeding. Said Judge — Reginald Grandison, “How did you because it is a Land Rover.” Chu said she was very sorry and that the damage was covered by insurance. The judge asked her where she learned to drive and whether she had received help with doiiig her driver's licence examination, She said she got her licence in Vancouver and that she had written hero ecxam in Cantonese without help. —annamaric@nsnews.cam . al roo pac?
