Martin Millerchip ° SPOTLIGHT FEATURE HEN MY father had the band, band came first. Now, with so many other activi- ties, you couldn’t exist using that avitude. Ror Smith is reluctant to admit that he has been teaching progressive generations of band members for close to 40 yeazs, but nevertheless he is still work- ing hard to ensure the continued growth of young North Shore musicians. On the one hand he admits that “kids have changed — espe- cially in the last few years” -- and thai some band practices leave him wondering why he does it. Yet this is the same band leader who constantly badgers his board members to work on increasing enrollment. Smith is band master for the beginner, intermediate and jurior sections of the North Vancouver Youth Band. His duties are far more time consuming than the obvious band rehearsals that run three times a week. He says he aver- ages 15-20 hours per week on band business.
