and marriage to Jane
(Prisciffa Presley) done to the
klutzy fieutenant? Sure, soci-
_ety is safer, but it’s not as
much fun.

Even his former police squad-
mates (George Kennecly, O. ].
Simpson), sense a void. The poor
* guy hasn't shot anyone in six
“months. “Funny how it's the little

things you miss,” Drebin admits.

But you know that his naked
gun won't be holstered for long.
Not when bad guys like Recco
Dillon (Fred Ward) anc his Ma
(Kathleen Freeman) are out there
plotting to blow up the most pre-
cious institution in America
(well, in Hollywood, at least) —
the Oscars.

Realizing that plot is extrane-
ous in these comedies, writers
David Zucker, Pat Proft and
Robert LoCash more or less dis-
pense with it. The jokes land fast
and furious. You get hilarious
parodies from The Untouchables
to The Great Escape, and cameos
from Raquel Welch, Pia Zadora
and “Weird Al” Yankovic.

The trouble is there’s not
much lett to tell without spoiling
the fun. (Although if you ‘ve seen
the television ads, you’ve seen
several of the better jokes.) | will
say that the Mother Theresa
musical number is howlingly
funny. So is the baby carriage
sequence that opens the film.

Upholding the fine tradition of
the Airplane/Naked Gun/Hot
Shots movies, good taste is
avoided whenever possible.

First there was the highly stylized
Katka. Now he’s tackled King of
the Hilf ~ a bay coming af age
during the Depression,

Twelve-vear-old Aaron (Jesse
Bradford) is a scholastic whiz
with a vivid imagination, but the
‘30s economic turmoil has splin-
tered his family. First little broth-
er, Sullivan (Cameron Boyd) is
farmed out to relatives and then
mom (Lisa Eichom) checks into a
TB sanitorium. When Dad hits
the road to sell watches, Aaron is
left atone in the seedy hotel room
to fend for himself (the original
Home Alone).

The stylized nostalgia is
unconvincing but the hotel’s col-
orful characters and superb act-
ing make this a worthwhile
rental}.
