McCredie CAPILANO College _basket- ball teams dropped home games this weekend, spoiling both the men's and womens’ squads perfect opening season record On Friday night, the Lady Blues lost their first game of the young season to a strong University College of Fraser Valley (UCFV) team, 76-38. The following night, the second game of a two day home stand, the Lady Blues lost by 10 to Vancouver Community College (VCC), 61-51. The women cagers are now 2-2 on the season, slipping from a first- place tie to third in the BCCAA standings. The mens* team, meanwhile, split their horae and home weckend stand, giving them a 3-1 record, and a share of second place with VCC. Dougias College tops the league standings with a perfect 4-0 record. On Friday night, Phil Langley’s team hung on to win a nail-bitter, 78-76, against UCFV. At one point the Blues were up by 15, but a spirit UCFV comeback almost spoiled Capilano’s home-opéner. Forward Todd Hinton led the Blues with 15, followed by Davis Sanchez with 14. The next night, the all-freshmen starting five faced an experienced VCC team, by far their biggest challenge of the season. Capilano played a strong game, but a stretch of lost concentration in the second period proved the differ- ence, as VCC went on to win 73-65. “We played great the first 19- and-a-half minutes of the first half, then we had that spell of five min- utes in the second half where we lost our focus, and against a good team you can’t do that,” Langley said following the game. The “spell” was brought on by a VCC full-court press that frustrated Blues’ guard Sanchez, who had an . otherwise excellent game, leading his team with 14 points, and playing some tenacious defence. The early second period lapse saw a half-time score of 30-30 tum into a 50-36 VCC lead six minutes into the period. Another blow to the Blues’ was the loss of ball-handling guard Gereld Coie, out on the first play of the game with a sprained ankle. Cole handles the duty of bring- ing up the ball with Sanchez, so his absence was felt in the second peri-. od. But Langley was optimistic after the game. “I think were making progress towards where we want to be at this time of the year,’ he said, but added, “Certainly we would have like to have won, but that’s a pretty good team.” Langley’s young team looked like a pretty good team in the first period, starting with Sanchez open- ing the scoring with a three-point Lightning TRS model IN-LINE SKATES SALE Reg.$279.99 * Men's & Ladies performance skate LYNN VALLEY: CENTRE “YOUR ‘CHOICE x bomb and followed by a big defen- sive rebound by Reimer over VCC big man Williscroft. .
