Shore resident Don Shwery WITH THE ultimate prize of the baseball world securely resting on Canadian soil, an influx of home-grown players are sure to head south in search of jobs in major-league baseball as teams look north of the border for untapped talent. Don Shwery, a North Shore res- ident since 1970, will be one of the scouts leading the way. As the Canadian scout for the Texas Rangers for the past three years, Shwery has signed a number of British Columbian players for a shot in the majors. Currently living in West Van- couver, Shwery has held the role of scout for a number of major- league teams over the last 16 years, including the Seattle Mari- ners, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, and the Los Angeles Dodgers. An affectionately signed photo of Dodgers skipper Tommy Lasorda hangs on the wall of Shwery’s harbor view office in Vancouver, His most recent signing is Genelle, B.C. native Jeff Derosa, a big hitting infielder who is cur- rently practising with .ma- jor-leaguers in Baton Rouge, La. Shwery is feeling good about his By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter latest find. “That son-of-a-gun has got a great big pair of hands, and a real quick bat,’’ he said of Derosa. The latter attribute is a key to Shwery: ‘If a kid doesn’t have a quick bat, he’s not ever going to have a chance hitting a fastball at the major level.”’ Also important to Shwery is the size and character of a prospect. ‘1 start looking at kids serious- ly when they’re between 14 and 15 years of age,’’ Shwery explained. “At that age you can begin to get an idea if the kid can develop his size and character with his abili- ty.” After that, Shwery said, the most important thing is to get the player into an American college program.
