Marine training institute offers courses, training THE PACIFIC Marine Training Institute (PMT!) is situated on waterfront property in the City of North Vancouver. The Institute specializes in restricted entry training programs for the commercial shipping and fishing industries, offering courses in such subjects as electronic navigation instruments, meteorol- ogy, chartwork and pilotage, astro-navigation, marine engineer- ing, the safe handling of various types of cargo and, in the case of marine engineering subjects, back-up theoretical courses. In addition to classroom in- struction, the Institute conducts courses in radar navigation simulators, Courses in sea survival and life-saving equipment opera- tion are offered, using an indoor training tank and an_ external launching wharf. The Institute also operates a Safety Training Centre (STC) at Maple Ridge, a smali community situated 58 km east of Vancouver. Courses offered at the STC in- clude marine and industrial fire fighting and training in emergency response associated with hazard- ous materials. The Pacific Marine Training In- stitute offers the 36-hour Master of a Small Passenger Craft Pro- gram (C.S.C.1) for small boat op- erators. Participants will become con- versant with basic chartwork, procedures for operating radar, loran C and depth surrounders, collision regulations and general boat knowledge. Participants can sit for the Ca- nadian Coast Guard oral exami- nation provided they mee: the necessary requirements. The following courses are pres- ented by North Shore Continuing Education in conjunction with the Pacific Marine Training Institute. Loran C: participants will become conversant with the operational principles of loran C, followed by demonstrations and hands-on practice using different types of receivers. Participants may bring their own sets along to the six-hour class. Practical use of radar: the par- ticipant will become familiar with the use of radar for coastal navigation and collision avoidance. Simulators are used with this program. Class duration is 20 hours. Coastal navigation: participants will become conversant with chartwork for use in coastal waters and with the Canadian Buoyage System. Class duration is 18 hours.
