to diagnose accurately is vitally
important.

who finds and corrects a malfune-
tion or, through carly diagnosis,
prevents one. hus provided a
valuable service to his customer.

Almost non-existent in most
tepair facilities until recently,
computerized diagnostic services
now are recognized by the
automotive service industry as
standard practice in preventive car
maintenance.

Most technicians believe a
tune-up on today’s electronic,
computer-controlied engines
should include a_ diagnostic
check-up followed by a
‘‘maintenance’’ tune-up as need-
ed.

More often than not, says the
Car Care Council of the
Automotive Industries Association
of Canada, the iatter services wiil
include necessary adjustments plus

replacement of those parts most
vulnerable to wear and deteriora-
lion: spark plugs, distributor cap
and rotor, wiring, PCV value and
filters.

On older cats with distributor
points and condenser, these also
are replaced as part of a tune-up.

Apparently such) services are
necded more frequently than are
being done. In the United States,
the American Automobile
Association (AAA) says 42. per
cent of their emergeney road ser-
vice calls last year were for cars
that would not start.

The Automobile Club of
Missouri found that 89 per cent of
more than 15,000 vehicles in-
spected in their St. Louis
diagnostic centre needed some
kind of ignition system
maintenance,

Council revealed 24 per cent of
1,206 motorists admitting their
cars ‘‘definiiely’’ or ‘probably’
