Friday, November 9. 1990 - North Shore News - 7 MAILBOX Parkway lights worth it === sf Ws | ’ SAFE & PROFESSIONAL if lives will be saved |” ‘Tree care i eiree val : so a When [ read D.R. (Doug) Copp’s Oct. 19 leer my car accident at the corner of Berkley and Mount tree removal, topping, thinning, pruning and stomach turned in disgust. He proposed the idea that hedges the speed limit along Mount Seymour Parkway be increased to 70 km/h and also stated that the in- stallment of traffic lights at Berkley and Apex would mean unnecessary delays. I greatly disagree with his opinions. Firstly, increasing the speed limit along the parkway to 70 km/h would encourage people to drive faster than they already do. If people exceed the present speed limit by seven or eight km/h because it feels ‘‘comfortable’’, who is to say that they would not exceed a 70 km/h speed limit by seven or eight km/h, over time? The present specd limit of 60 km/h has been established to be obeyed for safety. {f you want to drive fast, Mr. Copp, go to the race track, but don’t violate others by driving negligently on Mount Seymour Parkway. Secondly, I would like to address Mr. Copp’s opi- nion with regard to the proposed traffic lights at Berkley and Apex. He stated that there is not enough traffic to warrant these ‘‘unnecessary’’ delays along the parkway. The population of the community has grown con- siderably over the past three years due to the great expansion and construction of residential areas. This means ihat there are many more cars coming and go- ing along the. parkway than in past years. I believe that a traffic light at both of the locations mentioned would provide safety against those careless drivers who choose to drive faster than the legal speed limit. Seymour Parkway. The driver who hit them was 2o- ing almost double the speed limit. Perhaps if there was a traffic light at that location to guide drivers and provide an extra precaution, this horrible tag- edy may never have happened. At this corner there are too many things happening with too little guid- ance. I strongly believe that if traffic lights were installed at this location they would help reduce speed and would greatly increase the safety and direction of cars passing through the area. After the death of my sisters, there was a great uproar in the community followed by some future proposals and some public meetings about the in- stallation of traffic lights at Berkley. It had become such a great concern in the community because it was such a_ terrible tragedy. However, now that everything has quicted down somewhat, I have not heard any more taik or concern with regard to this issue. It seems to me that all is forgotten until there is another fatal accident or tragedy. Perhaps people do not realize how dangerous these intersections are. [ think that action should be taken to make these intersections safer. A few small delays are well worth it if they are able to prevent serious accidents and save lives. As for you, Mr. Copp, maybe you should get up carlier so that you do not have to speed along the parkway and curse at every red traffic light. Lori A. I am sincerely grateful for their encouragement, but after much serious consideration | have decided to decline. The reasons are many and varied, not the least of which is the emergence as candidate of Mr. Brice Macdougall, CA, retired partner of Price, Waterhouse and 33-year resident of West Van- couver. Mr. Macdougall has a sound financial management background, a wealth of business and community experience and is a better candidate than I for this full-time position in that his inter- ests are solely in West Vancouver.
