Cope with stresses of ‘caregiving’ AS LIFE expectancy continues to increase, more and more Cana- gdians are finding themselves in the “position of caring for an elderly parent or a disabled spouse. For many farnily members, this -egnstant responsibility can be ex- ‘tremely stressful, frustrating and exhausting. The North Shore Caregivers Support Group offers a program designed to help family caregivers cope with the stresses of caregiv- ing. This program is sponsored by New Horizons, a federal govern- - ment senioys program. Family members caring for a . .gpouse met every Tuesday from I to 3 p.m. at North Lonsdale Unit- ‘ed ‘Church, 3380 Lonsdate Ave., North Vancouver. Beginning Sept. 13, family members caring for an_ elderly parent will meet Wednesdays at the same time and the same church. “Both groups welcome new members,’’ said Phyllis Howard, the counsellor-coordinator of these suppcrt groups. These groups provide oppor- tunities for caregivers to come together and talk about their con- cerns with others who understand. “Because they all have similar concerns, they give each other much needed emotional support and share with one another ways of dealing with their concerns,”’ said How2rd. One group member said, ‘‘The caring and the sharing between one another is so helpful at a time like Jo **At these group meetings, we also have films, video tapes, talks and discussions on many issues of concern to family caregivers. And there also is time for relaxing and having fun,”’ said Howard. She said that participation in these groups makes caring for a loved one less stressful and a more vewarding experience for everyone concerned. For more information Howard can be reached Tuesdays and Fri- days at 985-7138 at the North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre.
