Since Jast year the North
Shore and Belle Cara
Jaycee’s have been lobbying

strongly to have the program |

reactivated in North Van-
couver and there finally
appears to be some progress
made.

Last Friday a represen-
tative of the provincial

,Attorney General's office

met with a North Shore
committee concerned with
the auxiliary police.

The RCMP liason with the
committee, Gary Sexsmith,

to various groups before
making a final decision on
‘the program.

He said the government is
“trying to get some
uniformity’ among. the
various reserve programs,
and also making sure the
question of’ liability is set-
ued.

“We are confident it (the

auxiliary program) will be
reinstated very soon,” said
Neil MacLean, a Jaycee who
has been leading the fight to
get the program reinstated.

McLean said the
provincial representative
told him he would be putting
together a full report that
will be ready in a few weeks.

He said the government
was going to take the
auxiliary force from the
Emergency Measures Act
and put it under the
jurisdiction of the B.C.
Police Act.

MacLean said since the
moritorium was placed on
the program the number of
auxiliary police in North Van
has dropped from almost 50
volunteers, to 26.
