Think carefully when buying your furniture LIKE ANY major purchase, buy- ing furniture for your home re- quires thought and care. One of the main concerns should be quality. Whether you are look- ing for practical or decorative fur- niture, it will be a long-term in- vestment and should be approach- ed seriously. The adage that ‘“‘you get what you pay for’' is as true for fur- niture as it is for anything else. The first step in deciding what to buy is to know the space you have to work with. Measure the overall width and length of the room, the door and window openings, the height of the windows, and the amount of free wall space. Allow for sufficient space for the doors to open and close, a minimum of two inches between pieces of furniture, and two inches between furniture and walls. A minimum of three feet should be allowed for passageway froin the doorways through the room. Because there are no absolute wrongs or rights about home fur- nishings, no hard-and-fast rules ‘which can’t be broken, you should choose furniture that pleases you and serves your purposes. If you are looking for a piece that will take a lot of wear and tear for in- stance, there is no use in buying an expensive delicate antique. It can also be helpful when choosing furniture to know what kind of look you want. The informal look consists of unstudied, down-to-earth simplici- ty where warmth and easy-going style are the rule. Opposite to that is the formal look, complete with luxurious fabrics, detailed floor coverings, crystal, and polished silver. The heart of the formal !ook is furniture that epitomizes grace and tradition. The sophisticated look is em- bodied by glamorous furniture with lots of trim. Sheer curtains, 5 Position All Weather Kesin chairs dramatic colors, wall graphics and unusual accessories are probably required. If shock value is what you're after, then it's the innovative look, where little or no regard is given to convention and almost anything goes. And finally there’s the eclee- tic look — a mix or match of any or all of the above. Your home furnishings are a reflection of your lifestyle and per- sonality.
