SKATER NEIL Paterson of North
Vancouver figured for a fourth
spot in overail standings following
the short program in a Skate
Canada event in Calgary.

Paterson finished in fifth spot in
a compulsory figures category, and
fifth in the short program in men’s
singles skating action in the Alber-
ta city.

Overall, Paterson is in fourth
spot with a total of five placement
points.

Canadian figure skating great
Brians; Osser from Ontario came
first in the men’s compulsory fig-
ures event, and Elizabeth Manley
captured the top women’s spot.

Orser and Manley lead the event
in men’s and women’s events,
respectively.

Three figures were compulsory
in this portion of the competition

— an inside counter, a paragraph
bracket and a paragraph loop.
Judges rated the skaters on their
shape and symmetry and the
cleanliness of the blade edges and
turns.

The group, started 12 years ago by Kay and Bill Gilmour, meets every Thursday night from 8:15-10:15 p.m.
Any adult who likes to skate is invited to participate.

Whistier
to make
more snow

WHISTLER AND Blackcomb
mountains will soon be installing
snowmaking equipment after the
recent announcement of $3.2 mil-
lion of federal and provincial gov-
ernment low-interest loans to help
fund the new equipment.

The $4.5-million snowmaking
installation will result in con-
tinuous snow cover on the bottom
of Whistler and Blackcomb moun-
tains, guaranteeing direct access
from the ski slopes to the village
centre throughout the season.

This ability to provide good
snow cover throughout the ski
season is expected to resolve the
current difficulty in attracting in-
ternational ski tourists in the pre-
Christmas period, said officials for Re

With the new equipment, the ski
season can now be extended by
four to six weeks, attracting an 7
