Sports __. 42 - Sunday, May 3, 1987 — North Shore News Seymour hosts Special Olympics MORE than a dozen skiers from Special Olympics groups throughout the Lower Mainland took part in the first annual Special Olympics provincial alpine division winter championships held recently at Mount Seymour. Represented were Coquitlam, Kimberly, North Vancouver, Var- conver and Victoria. The new North Shore Seymour Skibusters team was represented by Joe Barker, Cal Brandolini, War- ren Callin, Monique MacDonald and Lorraine McLatchie. : Organizing the team’s activities are coaches Al White and Dave Stewart and convenors : Evelyn Brandolini and Jim Best, special education teacher at Windsor Sec- ondary school. Sponsored by British Columbia Special Olympics (BCSO) and the Mount Seymour Ski School the purpose of the event was to qualify skiers for the national champion- ship slated for March 1988 in Ed- munston, N.B., explained Jennifer MacTavish, BCSO program assis- tant. Wayne Wong, director of Mount Seymour Ski School, helped to organize the event. Mount Seymour provided lunch as well as gates and timing equipment for the meet. The course was set by Windsor Secondary students and convened by Jim Best. The alpine event was preceded a week earlier by BCSO Nordic championships at Cypress and was followed by a speed skating meet in Abbotsford. “Special Olympics in B.C. is on ~ its way to developing a fully rounded program of winter: sports,’’ said MacTavish. NEWS | photo Tom Burley Bowlers roll to victory THE North Shore Monntaineers blind ‘bowling team returned recently with a trophy for its first-place finish in the April 25 South Van Isle five-pin bowling tournament held in Victoria. The four-member team, which includes Margaret Munn, Edith Scott, _fielen Sinclair and Ivan gon Locke, triumphed over five other teams of blind bowlers to win the tournament. The team will now go on to compete in the Totem Five-Pin Tournament scheduled to be played May 9 in Burnaby. The Mountaineers are supported financially by the North Shore Op- timists.
