14 - Friday, May 1, 1987 - North Shore News Entertainment NORTH VAN RESTAURANT Middle East delights served at the Cazhba THE CAZBA, 1352 LONSDALE, NORTH VANCOUVER, 984-7311 FROM my own distant recollections, cazbas are traditional- ly the delightfully seedy centres of Arabian towns, alive with the true character and spirit of their surroundings. North Vancouver’s Cazba falls short of the mark by that defini- tion, but manages to produce a credible slice of mid-to-near Mid- die Eastern cuisine. ~~ SPEEA table hopping by Timothy Renshaw The restaurant has been in the same location for five years, which is no small feat in the voracious lunch and dinner trade. Though its interior is showing the wrinkles and cracks doled out by the steady march of dining time, the Cazba’s longevity indicates an obvious cus- tomer loyalty. : Saeid Fazil, who took over management of the restaurant in January, has retained chef Ahmad Yusufi, increased meal portions and decreased meal prices. Entrees rarely stray above $10, and selection is a reasonably inter- esting assortment of such Greek standards as Mousaka ($8.95) and dishes from countries due east and south such as Joujehkebab ($9.95), charbroiled Cornish game hen marinated in a special Middle Eastern sauce. Service is pleasant, if somewhat slow, while atmosphere, at least on a recent Friday night visit, was _ Several amperes short of tradi- tional cazba voltages. An opening Caesar Salad, nor- . mally $2.95, but free with that evening’s entre: choice, was mediocre. It cam? sprinkled with bland, store-bought croutons and a somnolent dressing: bizarre 1,001 ice cream flavor philosophies. The Cazba is open every day for lunch and dinner. TASTY MORSELS SALMON HOUSE ON THE HILL, 2229 FOLKSTONE WAY, WEST VANCOUVER, 926-3212 The restaurant with one of the North Shore’s dest views has undergone another overhaul of in- terior decor and menu selection. Marzgement has revived nightly live piano music in the restaurant’s holding lounge and redecorated the Salmon House with new furniture, place mats and napkins. Overhaul to Salmon House booth seats has improved - views from these van- tage points. The restaurant’s display of traditional Indian ar- tifacts has been retained. Number of entrees has been in- creased from six to 18. “This Tuesday's Evening Spe Imported North Sea Plaice Sauteed in-wine with shrimp and mussels. §95 | * Open Daily from llam e Serving Lunch and Dinner « 2nd Floor on the watertront at Lonsdale Quay Market 987-3322 Elegant family owned French Restaurant dedicated to ex- cellence. Entrees sampled included Beef < Nets Seats st Scuvlaki ($9.95) and Fesenjoon ($7.95). The former included a generous skewer of charbroiled meat served between mountains of Basmati tice, vegetables and slabs of pita. Meat was tasty, if somewhat well done. Fesenjoon, bilied as a gourmet meal of chicken and crushed walnuts, was served in a sweet, brown sauce accompanied with another mountain range of ° Basmati rice. The dish might be an - interesting departure from the well-worn chicken trail for some, but it was too sweet for my tastes and the chicken meat was mashed a little too enthusiastically, leaving no: Jarge chunks upon which to chew. The Cazba’s Persian ice cream ($2.25) was very good. .Home- made, the ice cream came flavored with rosewater and saffron and tasted almost floral.
