Apartment gas fire averted A FIRE hazard was averted after a freak accident sheared off an apart- ment building’s natural gas valve, according to a North Vancouver City Fire Department spokesman. . Insp. Gavin Soanes said 2 painter’s scaffolding fell on the natu- rat gas meter at Glen Manor, causing the gas to leak out. The ac- cident occurred Wednesday at 3:10 p.m. at 200 East 12th Street. He said a painter activated the building’s fire alarm, and tenants were evacuated. He said the NVCFD was able to respond quickly and shut off the natural gas line’s main control valve. He said there was a danger that an ignition, from possibly a match or cigarette, could cause an explosion. The tenants were able to return to the apartment after their win- dows had been opened, allowing the natural gas to dissipate. Candidates meet in WV FIVE WESTERN ratepayer groups in West Vancouver are sponsoring an all-candidates meeting Sunday, Nov. 9. The meeting will take place at Gleneagles Elementary School, starting at 7:30 p.m. Called the Hot Seat Challenge, organizers of the meeting said candidates will be required to answer questions on issues (hey have not likely seen before. A spokesman for the groups said candidates will be divided into two adversarial groups — incumbents and newcomers. The candidates themselves will prepare the questions to ask the opposing group.
