tt §2 - Sunday. March 10, 1985 - North Shore News Travel Love in the outback called over by a friend at our local club the B= ON THE subject of Australia, [| was other day. Her daughter had recently return- ed from Australia and in the course of her visit had met an Australian man and become quite attached to him. Mom couldn't resist clipp- ing and pinning up the col- umn I wrote, containing my Australian friend’s warning about marrying Australian men: (... “you'll run a poor fourth to their mates, — men friends, — stubbies, — beer, — and their football.**) Her daughter, in turn, read the column over the phone to her Aussie boyfriend. **Tell her we also eat our young,’’ was his reply, although I got the idea that he might have grudgingly agreed with the remark! Also on Australia: DEAR MRS. McCREADIE: I enjoyed your two recent columns on travel in Australia. Our experiences there in November ’84 were often very similar. Morey matters: The ‘‘no tipping’ custom we found a pleasant surprise. The 4 litre wine casks for $6 or less ($16-317 in Canada) were too. We had no trouble chang- ing Aust. $ Travellers’ che- ques (on a previous visit hanks didn’t object to cashing Canadian dollar cheques). Visa and Mastercard have been picked up again recently by some local banks and their acceptance is spreading. Places from small retailers to gas stations were accepting them. In 1984 the Australian dollar notes were replaced by a bronze coin slightly larger than a Canadian quarter. It seems to have been accepted quite readily. Shopping: Trading cn two evenings and Saturday after- noons is now general, in new South Wales at least. We stocked up again on two ethnic items — Vegemite and ‘ugg’? boots. Vegemite you can’t get in Canada and ‘‘ug- gies’’ (ankle-length sheepskin boots with the fleece inside) are sold widely in Australia but you must shop around for the best price. We paid $25 Aust. a pair. Social customs: Language: if you fly QANTAS to Australia out of Vancouver, you're likely to get off in Cairns. Look for a copy of G.A. Wilkie's ‘Dictionary of Australian Colloquialisms’’ ~- $6.95 in ithe airport bookshop. Barbara, your friend Kaye cant live in Melbourne if her male is interested in football (rugby). Only Sydney and Brisbane play rugby. Melbourne is fanatical about “Aussie Rules’? (one point for kicking a ‘‘behind’’), It's known as aerial ping-pong to Sydney-ites who know nothing about it. Both Cairns and Brisbane lack them — a real pain. Our QANTAS tickets allowed us to land in Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns then straight to Vancouver at no extra cost. Sure, it saved money but having to go through the international flight procedures on what were purely internal legs of our trip was a bother. Live and learn. ™“ SELL IT! It is distributed by Kraft foods and costs $3.49 for « 328 gram tin. [ tried it in Australia and decided right then that [ would resist any efforts made on my behalf by Aussies determined to con- vert me to smearing that gunk on my morning toast. My cat. drags in better- looking breakfast food. I didn’t buy uggies since Ud have had to buy five pairs — my family would have lov- ed them but my = suitcase wouldn't have. A lot of airports don't have left-luggage lockers. Although it probably isn’t the reason in Australia, ask any Brit what the ILR.A. left in the luggage lockers! I°l bet you won't find any in the Middle East, either. QANTAS tells me that their flights between Brisbane, Cairns and Sydney are only available to interna- tional travellers and therefore, each passenger must be cleared to leave the country, As for the plastic money, I'm glad to hear that it’s ac- cepted again if only for the sake of travellers. Before -] went to Australia nobody thought to warn me there was no Visa in Australia. I’ve been used to relying on my card ali over the world and 1 was caught short of cash down under.
