Ald - Wednesday, July 25, 1984 - North Shore News NORTH VAN DISTRICT Council says no for now to Montroyal extension THE CONTROVERSIAL Montroyal Boulevard extension was defeated by North Vancouver District Council Monday, to the delight of the cit- izens packing the Council chambers. Council made seven rec- ommendations in connection with the extension, voting $-2 that the extension not be built at this time. The other recommenda- tions included a decision to install a cul-de-sac on Madeley west of Norwood with emergency exits, and to monitor the traffic counts in the Delbrook, Evergreen, Mahon, Windsor and North Prospect area. Council also called for a review of the school crossing system in the Montroyal area, and an in-depth look at the traffic signals in the Delbrook and Queens area. Other recommendations included a delay in the Braemar-Dempsey link, with the scheme approved in principle subject to finaliza- tion of the land-use plan; that Starlight Way not be ex- tended as a through road to Montroyal Blvd.; and that all persons supplying input to the issue be officially thanked by Council. Ald. Mary Segal was the most vocal supporter of the Montroyal extension, saying the extension should have been put through years ago, instead of being delayed for another indefinite pernod of time. By JOANNE MacDONALD She said she was not will- ing to be part of a Council which resorted to stop gap measures such as cul-de-sacs, ALD. Stephen McMinn concurred with Segal that the extension be constructed, saying the District should look at the impact of traffic in the District at large. He said he was in favor of the extension as it ‘‘provides a logical road system in the municipality,’’ which would alleviate traffic problems in the rest of the district. Ald. Joan Gadsby, who voted against the extension, said she believes the physical characteristics of Montroyal Blvd. make it unsuited to an extension. She added the ex- tension should have been constructed years ago, be- fore neighborhoods were established in the area. Mayor Marilyn Baker said no matter which decision was made, that some resi- dents were bound to. be unhappy with Council’s ver- dict. She said she decided after studying the consul- tant’s traffic report that there was not significant concern to warrant a large expenditure on road _ con- struction by the District at this time. Baker said while it might be convenient to re-route traffic to some local streets. that residents should make better use of arterial routes than at present. Ald. Craig Clark, against the extension, % Oo 6S oe traffic also said y Kitchens -980- 4848 his greatest concerns were for the residents in the area, ather than the traffic. He said traffic should be remov- ed from the neighborhoods, with other problems, such as cul-de-sacs, to be addressed first. He added that the safe- ty factor of crossing Mon- troyal at the five-way in- tersection at Rockland and Prospect should also be ad- dressed. ‘“‘In my opinion, there is not sufficient evidence to support an opening of Mon- troyal,’’ said Clark.
