Pr Al8 - Sunday, July 29, 1984 - North Shore News Gs federal election ELECTION PROFILE Economy is Whaley’s concern LARRY WHALEY wants to deliver a message to Ottawa that the solution to the economic pro- blems facing Canadians is to give the people who have the initiative a chance to create jobs and new businesses with the help of a made in Canada in- terest rate policy. And as NDP candidate for Capilano, Whaley, a father of five, says he has a background and a game plan that will enable him to assist precisely those kinds of peo- ple. The Alberta-born Whaley moved to B.C. in 1967, liv- ing on the Lower Mainland from 1968 until 1980. In the early 1970s, he started organizing tenants for the B.C Tenants Organization and the Van- couver Tenants Council, work which brought him to the North Shore to deal with local residents here. He later moved to a post with the Office of the Rent- alsman and in 1976 changed to the Ministry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs where he worked as a Vancouver debt counsellor from 1976 to 1980. He transferred to the same position in Nanaimo in 1980, staying there until the spring of 1983 when he became frustrated with the treatment people were receiving from financial institutions: ‘‘It got the better of me.”’ He reacted by using his vacation time to (ravel throughout the province on a fact-finding mission in order to get the response of the public to a _ proposed ethical code in the credit in dustry. Following his vacation, he applied for a leave of absence to continue his ef- forts but tt was demed by his employer, the Mimistry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. He was advised to return to his job and to stop cnticizing financial institu Hons. “*L refused and as a tesult. was dismissed,”’ Whalicy The matter went to ar bitrahon, but the single ar bitrator culed that Whaley had been “unsubordinatc’' which proved to be just cause for a dismissal! And although Whalcy says he conducted his commission rndependent of his governm ent yob, part of the assuc at thal point was his faiure to retuen lo work at the cnd of his vacation “Phe Ministry saad do two things “harst,) return to work, and second. stop crit recalls SUMMER SALE (at these prices) Window Screens tom sift wire es tapi BOG *y2°° tem gman mal 8 eed watch nary I 7 4 5° aad ap Vath. chm se pews Heavy, Lrety awtal Free Measuring Rave eve ore et The Bugs are orate is if i in, bestallata se: avatlathe $200 ped tw ie “¢ APILANO GLASS AND SCREENS LID lan atton ©2 1483 Barrow Road North Van 980-3735 WE AL S00 KE SO REE N YOUR OC 1) SO REE ONS, By JOANNE McDONALD cizing the banks.’ | said | cannot do that,’’ says Whaley. LARRY WHALEY .. bas game plan He has continued with his crusade, establishing the Na- tional Credit Ethics Associa- tion in April, 1984. The em- phasis of the membership- based organization is to deal with the problems of people as well as trying to pressure the financial institutions to change the way in- which they function. He says the reaction of banks has been favorable to borrowers when challenged by the Association. But the September clection has enabled the Nanaamo- based Whaley to change directions. Now he ts runn- ing in Capilano because with “ats high per capita income, the problems people face here are the same as elsewhere in the province ex cept in some cases magnified even more - especially with therr high mortgages, many professionals and small businesspeople are atfected by interest rates Hle plans to campaign not only the made in €C anada in terest rate polmy, but says the governinent “must reduce mortgage rates and give small businesses the hind oof asysured interest that's gomp to make oat possible for chem to tures thon % " p Atel Hull mgt hg eed tall Ama ctl on He says another issue of grave concern is the quesuiion of nuclear disarmament. According to Whaley, Canada should declare itself a nuclear weapons free zone because ‘‘people deserve the opportunity to live free of fear of nuclear war — they deserve peace and security. The fact that the two other parties are saying thal a nu- clear freeze is not a reason- able approach just boggles my mind. To reverse the build-up of weapons you have to stop building them.”” Whaley says he will also fight for the equahty of women, providing a reason- able approach to affirmative action, ensuring equal pay for equal work, and pro- viding for available child care. A member of the party since 1970, Whaley says, ‘*The NDP is the only politi- cal party that’s talking seriously about doing some- thing about interest rates in this election. Broadbent has clearly laid out a_ policy regarding pulting a tax on an outflow of capital W hat we need to do 1s to stop that outflow of capital and give ut an opportunity to work for Canadians here in Canada."’ He says his chances of winning the Capilano seat are good since ‘‘people have nothing to gain from selec- ting one of those other two parties because, quite frankly, they’re bankrupt for ideas.”’ “‘T.think that it’s a brand new ballgame, says Whaley. ‘‘Yes, the Conser- vatives will be tough, but the people are looking for good representation, (someone) who can best stand up in Or1- tawa and fight on the basis of the kind of message they want to see delivered "" BRIGHOUSE PET & SUPPLIES INC. = Pe | ae ~ YOUR ONE ; ams®= 1st Annual taas* Brighouse Dog Pageant mn association with the To be held at PARK VILLAGE SHOPPING CENTRE Sunday, August Sth, 1984 8115 Park Road, Richmond 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. FREE SPECTATOR ADMISSION TO PAGEANT FREE Entry Forms availabie at Brighouse Pet & Supplies; Community Recreation Centres throughout the Lower Maintand.
