Pity poor ol ‘all him foot-and-mouth disease Mulroney, and feel sorry for Mary Collins and Chuck Cook, who now have to pretend that they and Brian are not related. Did you ever see such a bonehead performance as Mulroney’s ‘‘jokes’’ on patronage? Here’s a guy who is offered a home run, courtesy of the trough-loving Liberals, and he has to go and screw it up. Not that he hadn’t already screwed things up, which is why he’s not galloping ahead in the polls. Still, there hadn’t been anything quite like the Liberal patronage scandal. Not since the last time, anyway. And then Mulroney has to go and joke | about it. Or so he says. 1 don’t believe for one minute that he was joking. What he said on that plane, | am sure, came from the real Brian Mulroney. The real Brian Mulroney is an old-style Irish politician who would send free drinks to everyone in the country if he thought it would put him into the prime minister’s chair. The only thing Brian really believes in is Brian. He was talking about Bryce Mackasey’s disgraceful ambassadorial appointment by Doug Collins to Portugal when he put his foot in his mouth, and what he said was: **Let’s face it. There’s no whore like an old whore. If 1’d been in Bryce’s position, I’d have been right in there with my nose in the public trough like the rest of them.”’ Of course he would. I’ve never doubted it. Wasn’t he_ the guy who said he could see a roomful of senators in his audience? In any event, here’s how I know he wasn’t joking: — When politicians travel with the media, the inex- perienced ones let their hair down. And their tongues out. And it’s usually all off the record. This time, Batter-for- Brains Brian made it off the record after the record was playing. His final line was: ‘‘I’m taking the highroad now.”’ He got that wrong, too. He should have said the low road, because after going in- to hiding for a day he came slinking on to TV, using his parson’s voice and making inept apologies. A disgusting performance. ses Talking about TV, did you see those fanatics in Win- nipeg trying to beat the hell out of the Indian consul the other night in yet another in- stance of Sikh violence? | say ‘‘another’’ because there have been incidents a-plenty. Two years ago, for example, a judge cowered behind his bench in Toronto while a Sikh killed three people in the courtroom, including a lawyer. a Those peace-loving im- migrants would have killed the consul, too. ‘‘Kill the bastard,’’ they were shouting. Only a big effort by the cops prevented the man from being carried off in a box. It wasn’t violence, of course. Their wild-eyed spokesman said so. And if it was violence, then it was all the fault of the cops. No charges were laid. But if you or I tried such a trick we'd be behind bars in no time. Still, | hope politicians of all parties were watching, ' they being responsible for let- ting those people into this country. But that’s not really the item. The item is that right after that piece of East In- dian culture went off the screen we saw the Liberals’ multiculturalism propaganda ad, the one in which a milky voice purrs: ‘‘Canada! — a _ special place where we are free to celebrate our freedom and keep our own culture. Come on, Canada.”’ Come on for what?
