The reading clinic Stewart is offering is available to students needing extra help during the summer. Individual training From page C1 habits young children learn, Stewart says, include phonetic reading and sight reading. Where the phonetic reader reads for sounds, the sight reader learns and memorizes whole words. If either child does not go beyond this stage, com- prehension and fluency could be compromised, because the phonetic reader gets caught up in sounds, and the sight reader comes across words he doesn’t recognize, so can’t conquer them phonetically Combined, the two skills make a better reader, so Stewart) will work with weaknesses Stewart talked about other problems children have, hke reversals of letters or words, omissions of words. all together, weak left to right eye span for reading and a lack of vocabulary Through the Fry _ English as a second language readability format, Stewart can rate the reading level of a child by counting syllables. ‘*Textbooks in other subjects are Often at a much higher level,’> she explained, ‘‘and this affects the student’s at- titude towards the subject.” Study skills are therefore an important part of learn- ing to read, Stewart continued, for the child to be able to extract pertinent information and organize tt into a logical tramework, and to differentiate between technical and pleasure reading Stewart has an extensive background in reading, with a BA. in Enghsh and an M.A in reading at UBC She trained in Sydney, Austraha as an Enghsh and special education teacher, and taught a special reading class in) Melbourne = She spent five years as a Learn ing Assistance teacher in West Vancouver, and taught to Edmonton’s Vietnamese Boat People for two years.
