TWO HIKERS who became stuck for the night in an avalanche area beyond Grouse Mountain last weekend when one of them broke his ankle were lifted to safety by helicopter. The men spent Saturday mght shivering on Crown Mountain, about two miles behind Grouse, compietely unequipped for an overnight hike. They were found early Sunday morning by volunteer members of North Shore Rescue who followed their tracks through the rug- ged terrain. Drew Van Brunt, aged 24. of 1115 Chartwell Drive, THIEVES may be turning to growing their own produce during these hard times, if thefts in West Vancouver are anything to go by. West Van police report an increasing trend of thefts of garden tools and equipment Among left in yards. the AS - Wednesday, June 15, 1983 - North Shore News y CHRIS LLOYD West Vancouver, and Ed Alder, 17, of 1075 West 23rd Street, North Vancouver, had set off for a day’s hike Saturday. Their families rais- ed the alarm when the pair failed to return by midnight. Seventeen members of North Shore Rescue set off after them shortly after 2 a.m., the majority of them starting from Grouse. A small group began from the bottom, in the water- board area, and it was this group which picked up the hikers’ tracks at about 4 a.m. They followed the tracks up Dean Creek until they reach- ed the two at 0:45 a.m. They found that Alder had sustain- ed an ankle injury — which kinds of items being taken are weedeaters, shovels, rakes and brooms. A police spokesman says: “People seem to be leaving these items in their yards rather than putting them away and thieves are just coming along and taking them.” TRACKED DOWN BY SEARCHERS Trapped hiking pair airlifted was later determined to be a break which had prevented them from getting out of the area in time the previous day. Van Brunt had also receiv- ed scrapes in a fall and rescuers had donned helmets in the search after one of them was hit by a rock in the avalanche conditions. North Shore Rescue coor- dinator Jeff Jefferd told the News: “They (the hikers) had picked a very difficult route to go in. There were slide areas with a lot of loose rocks. It was very difficult terrain — difficult at the best of times, never mind with a broken ankle. Our fellows even used ropes.” A BCTV helicopter flew the two out of the area and they were taken to Lions Gate Hospital Thieves like gardening Hybrid Geraniums (4” pot) 20-20-20 HI-SOL Plant Now for Summer Color. 4” potted Instant Color Marigolds, Ageratum, Begonia & Impatiens 12-4-8 Lawn fertilizer TAZ 1 Marine (tive West Var cnivet Green Valley Hi-Sol 20 20 20 SPECIAL 7 99 20 kp. e bap for quality selection and service WEST VAN FLORIST LTD 922-4171 922.3968 OPEN SUNDAYS (10 am to 5 pm) Get the Most from your plants, use OO) ay 99 e Baa
