will continue to grow, there
is a greater need for ex-
tended care.

However, in line with
modern thinking that it is
often better to provide care
for seniors im their own
home, the committee does
not recommend any increase
in the number of extended
care beds in addition to
those already planned.

It is also im favour of
encouraging the ‘flexicare’
approach to seniors in which
different levels of | medical,
nursing and home help could
be made available within the
same care complex to supply
the varying needs of
residents.

Among other
mendations the
suggested that:

@ Council should investigate
the possibility of setting up a
share-a-home program for
seniors;

e The municipality should
encourage non-profit
societies to consider
cooperative seniors housing
as well as other types;

e Council could encourage
these non-profit societies by
exercising its zoning powers
and enabling them to buy or
lease land at low cost.
