Widely respected for his creative talent as Composer and musician, he was also well-liked for his sunny and well-balanced disposition. He twice visited England and received an honorary degree at Oxford. He composed three oratorios, a number of masses, cantatas, and songs, more than 100 symphonies. and many concertos, quartets, etc. He is credited with having perfected the chamber music quartet. Conducting the concert is Rupert Lang, organist and choirmaster for the West Vancouver United Church. Born in Manitoba, Lang graduated with honours from Cambridge University in England. A licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music, he played with the Vancovuer Opera Association, the Community Music School at Vancouver and in numerous churches. Well known as a promising young composer, his recorded works have been played on the CBC. Soloists are Heather Sabourin, soprano, who trained in the music department at UBC and who has performed with the Okanagan Symphony, the UBC Opera Department, the University Singers, and the Vancouver Mozart Society. William Kelly, base, has been a_ soloist with the Cantata Singers and Handel Society of Vancouver and with the Montreal Bach Choir. He has also sung with the Vancouver Chamber Choir. Kathryn Nicholson, alto, has sung with the Toronto Mendelsohn Choir, the Ontario Place Singers, and with the Canadian Opera Company Chorus. FOR REGIONAL COMPETITION A North Shore theatre group. will travel to Kamloops in June to compete in the provincial Theatre B.C. finals at the first annual B.C. Festival of the Arts. The Festival of the Arts, which will take place June 2 to June 5, 1s a government sponsored showcase of amateur art involving provincial level competinon in music, dance, drama, and fine art. Along with com- petinons, the Festival will feature master classes, demonstrations, and en- tertainment. The Actors Company, from Horseshoe Bay/ West Vancouver, became eligible for competition at the B.C Festival of the Arts by winning the Theatre B.C., North Shore zone regional competition. The group, consisting of Graham Cowley, Richard Sah, Duncan Cleathero, Colin’ O'Hanlon, Tony Walters, Chris Duggan, Nancy Ebert, Sheila Aron, David Burns, Roger Nen- dick, Kevin Manning, Terry Pedersen, Amyn Sunderji, Rob Fink, Jerry Bean and Mary-Louise McClausland is the director.
