Al4 - Sunday News, February 21, 1982 City demands fax reform PROPERTY TAXES should not be used to support schools, North Wancouver City council has decided. “A major reform is need- ed,” Alderman Bill Sorenson told aldermen of the present taxation system, which has local residents screaming in the face of ; soaring assessments. Homeowners in the Lower Mainland have complained that they are now carrying an unfair burden of school taxation after their property values took off to stratospheric levels last year Sorenson told council the provincial government should pay 100 per cent of school costs, based on the number of students in cach school distnct “School distnets should then pay 100 per cent of other, fnll, programs.” he told council North Vancouver City council agreed the cost of education should be remov- ed from the property tax. At the same time it en- dorsed a resolution by the Greater Vancouver Residen- tial District (GVRD) that the provincial government lessen the property tax burden on local citizens. They'll be taking these resolutions to the upcoming meeting of the Union of B.C. Municipalities.
